"Guns level the playing field against Assholes" What kind of absurd thinking is that, the Asshole is the one with the gun! That was some seriously blinkered, illogical, fearmongering, hypothetical thinking there by Doug.

He is true, but it's a very blinkered approach for comedies sake. I think if I had the choice I'd rather get a punch for being a dick (We are all culpable of it from time to time) than die. Which country has more deaths each year? That and the fact America has been at war for around 200 years of its 250 year existence. He conveniently forgot to talk about those things.

if i had a choice, i would get a gun instead of getting stabbed in the neck on the streets of Britain by a guy who's into knives and hat a pint too many.

This is funny, but it's also totally wrong. The U.S. and the U.K. have roughly equivalent violent crime rates. The difference is that in U.K. cities (and most older European cities), you generally have a pedestrianized city centre with loads of pubs where everyone across the social spectrum (but mostly WC and LMC lads) hangs out, and when sh*t kicks off, it does so in plain view. In the U.S., urban neighborhoods are completely segregated by class and race, and endemic violence accretes around certain neighborhoods, which anyone with a car and money can avoid--therefore you're less likely to _see_ all the violence in person. I saw more bar fights in 1 year in Vienna than I did in 6 years in Atlanta, but that's got nothing to do with the _rate_ of violent crime in these cities. So, we're left with the same basic problem. In the U.K., as long as you mind your own business and stay away from "rough" areas, you're generally safe as houses. In the U.S., you can get shot in the chest for texting in a movie theater.
