Big Think - Would you vote for a psychopath?

Big Think - Would you vote for a psychopath?

(4:25) We think of psychopaths as crazed killers outside of society. People like Anders Breivik, the Norwegian gunman who killed 77 people in a bomb and shooting rampage in 2011. Neuroscientist James Fallon looks at how past US presidents measure in psychopathy, and what that says about the qualities we want our leaders to possess.

"Hitler was examined by psychiatrist Dr Edmund Forster, who diagnosed him as ‘a psychopath with hysterical symptoms'" So there seems to be some conflict with the content of this video.

Ctl c + Ctl v from nytimes archive, eh. If you research that tedious link, even for two minutes you'll realise that report was based on a bs story made up by the americans in the early 40's. Also the report mistranslated Hitler's diagnosis of hysteria after a gas attack by the good guys who won the war. Troll on.

Wrong. I put quotes around it to show it wasn't my wording so I'm not hiding the fact that I copy and pasted it. It was not from the nytimes but was from a UK paper called the Express.

It wasn't a mistranslated diagnosis of hysteria. The controversy about that diagnosis is that today's doctors have given up on the use of the term hysteria as a diagnostic replacing it with a category like somatization disorder. In the 80's the Psychiatric association changed the diagnosis of hysterical neurosis to conversion disorder. The IDC-9 diagnostic code is 300.11.

Anyway, the video was talking about him not being a psychopath and you used the strawman fallacy to misdirect the conversation. Dr. Edmund Forster did diagnose him as a psychopath while he was a corporal. That is factual.

The fact that Hitler believed that he was visited by an almighty power who told him he was to be Germany’s saviour is enough proof of his psychopathy for me. He preached about his divinity and thought he would complete Christ's mission and be cruicifed at the end. Is that the way a non-psychopath thinks?

Few signs and symptoms of a psychopath:
Criminality - Hitler was a war criminal and many of his high ranking nazi's were sentenced to death for their war crimes. Hitler killed himself but probably would have had a similar fate.

Violence. Hitler's rise to power involved assassinations and beatings. Even if he did not perform those tasks personally, his lack of empathy and sympathy for those people is another symptom of a psychopath.

Moral judgment. The killing of 6 million jews was immoral

So no links to back up your story, and prove my strawman, eh. You can't provide what doesn't exist. Nor can you even provide evidence that Hitler stayed at the same hospital as Forster or was even a patient of his. What you're basing your knowledge on is second hand information, 20 years later. Ah, you americans and your bs evidence. Very similar to the jebus story i.e. NO FIRST HAND EVIDENCE AT ALL.

So Hitler was a pyschopath because he heard a fairy man in the sky talking to him. There are 1 billion catholics(HAHHAHA, no there isn't but they say there is) in the world, and billions of others with similar retarded philosophy's, are they also all pyschopaths. They hear the same guy (Not the same guy but a creation of their own want). in their head. Is every person with religious motive a pyscho?

Catholics have been persecuting the jews for years and justifying it using a book they wrote. Hitler was no different. You, sir are not as enlightened as you believe.

I'm not going to ask you to prove the rest of your rant but let's just say your morals are spot on, your self indignant faux anger though is misdirected. I'm just trying to push you in the right direction. You've great energy to be correct, I'm just giving you the information to be correct :-)

I'd say it's not so much people wanting to vote for psycopaths as psycopaths behaving according to what people want: adopting behaviours and personas that conform to others' expectations.

Jon Ronson's "The psycopath test" is worth a read to go into this in some more depth.

And yes, he should do some media training to discover how his lip-licking detracts from his message.

Very interesting! Some of it was thought proviking and definitely new to me. Thank you so much for posting it.

(As for the lip licking: If you can't stand it, look the other way while listening.)
