Of course having just won the midterm elections, you could say they are very much the mainstream, and its the democrats who are off the spectrum, but somehow I dont think a diehard blinkered liberal like Noam will ever be able to see it as such.

You didn't get what off the spectrum mean... The system is based on cooperation of the parties. The Republicans are off the spectrum in that they themselves have said that they will not cooperate with the democrats... The fact that they convince people to vote for them, just like religious leaders convince people of the presence of an invisible man in the sky, doesn't change anything to that fact.

Latest comment:

The Democrats have a history of trying to pass laws with unpalatable clauses tacked onto it and refusing to compromise, why should the Republicans cooperate ?, especially since the Democrats have built up quite a reputation for lying to the public through their teeth about effects of new laws, see Grubering for details, Oh and only a blinkered idiot idiot tacks on a comment about religion to an argument about political chicanery

From a European perspective, this seems correct.

Many Conservatives, even some among those further out on the scale (Progress Party here in Norway), would vote for the Democrats rather than the Republicans. And what the Bush jr government was off the scale.
