They lie because we elect them and then trust them to do their best for us. Somewhere along the line after election, they get a taste for power, influence, money etc. and turn to the dark side, abandoning most of us in the process of getting richer and more powerful. Tony Blair and his wife are now worth tens of millions of pounds between them and I can't think of a single positive thing either of them have done to benefit British people, either while he was in politics or since. What he'll be remembered for is joining Bush in the hunt for fictional weapons of mass destruction and its subsequent invasion of territories who posed little or no threat to our nation. In doing so, he has the deaths and maimings of many military personnel to answer for. I was going to say 'on his conscience' but I don't believe he has one.
