I don't understand why the US don't just take out the oil fields. Might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone - cut ISIS revenue, as well as keeping all that carbon underground, forever.

I have found myself pondering the same possibility, but on a grander scale. What exactly is the down side to nuking the middle east into a giant glass desert? Morality, and a bit of ecology, I suppose, but to make the oil unavailable until new technology or radioactive half life allow further oil production, and presumably in the meantime be forced into taking renewable energy seriously, while selling north sea oil at a premium seems attractive. No more of our fuel money going to fund Saudi religious fanatics, and I won't care about the medieval religious preferences of the very few survivors in a land returned to the wasteland it was before we learned to suck oil from the sand. The Israelis are then welcome to establish new settlements anywhere they like in nuclear winter wonderland. Now, to address the "far too much cologne" problem in young male Arabs living elsewhere...
