Haha this thread goes to show that the british hate a success story. This guy is involved in so much charity work from missing people to business starts ups, anti-nuclear to wildlife and raises awareness for countless others. I bet the leeches to society are the whingers on here who wouldn't put a dime in a collection pot but criticize selfmade millionaires for not doing enough.

Lance Armstrong won the Tour De France 7 times. He was quite the success story. People hate him now because he cheated.

Richard Branson's first company pretended to export records and then sell them in the UK through mail order to avoid purchase tax thus undercutting his rivals. He cheated then and he has cheated the UK out of millions in tax for the past 40 years through aggressive tax avoidance.

Check out this from March regarding his latest business venture helped again by the UK governent.

Lance Armstrong? Whaat? Doping is not the same as using tax havens. Using tax havens is part of corporate infrastructure and every multinational does it.. Tesco, Kingfisher, Barclays, M&S, Rolls Royce, BT, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. It's not breaking law. Maybe it should be, but it isn't so everyone with a decent accountant does it.

Richard Branson isn't a risk taker as the interviewer suggests. He is a carpetbagger. He has never invested heavily in anything. He only goes into sectors where the government will subsidise and cover losses and then Virgin take all the profits, eg; Broadband, Railways, taking over Northern Rock. This man isn't an entrepreneur, he is a leech sucking all that is good out of Britain and not paying his taxes. He should rot on Neckar island and stay the **** away from the UK

How is he a carpetbagger, assuming you know what the term means? Born and bred in London where the HQ for Virgin Group exists to this day.

I have no idea what carpetbagger means. I just put two random words together and hey presto it just happened to describe Richard Branson. If you want to keep that term to its original historical context then you can never refer to anyone as a carpetbagger unless you own a time machine. Branson is an opportunist with friends in government who help him out.

Virgin HQ may be in London, but that doesn't mean the profits aren't siphoned off to Branson's offshore accounts with multiple tax avoidance measures in place. Arcadia group is based in London and Philip Green has placed ownership in his wife's name, who happens to live in Monaco, and therefore avoids tax on profits drawn out of the business. The HQ of a business means nothing in terms of tax.

Correct, you don't know what carpetbagger means. I'm not talking about the historical definition. It means someone who doesn't live in an area coming in to make money. It's got nothing to do with opportunism. You clearly have an axe to grind but check the insults you sling around, or it makes you look dumb and disgruntled.

I like the fact you can only see carpetbagger as the exact term of someone who lives outside an area and coming in to make money. Can you not see how Branson is outside the industries he goes into to make money.

You clearly have an axe to grind with people on the internet. You should check how phrases can envelop more meanings than your dumb and disgruntled mind can handle before you sling comments around.

Aw bubba. Did I hit a nerve? I don't have an axe to grind against just anyone on the internet. Just people who hate success and misuse simple terms. Everyone starts from outside their industry and everyone goes into industry to make money. Don't throw your dolly from the pram just because he's done it better than you!!

He also associates himself and Virgin with charities that look good on his brand - spreading the Virgin logo far and wide. But somehow the money never gets to the charities who then just find themselves as an unpaid part of his self-publicity machine.

And don't get me started on Virgin trains.

I agree, he's a leech
