Hans Rosling: Don't trust news to understand the world

(2:18) You can't trust the news outlets if you want to understand the world. Swedish professor Hans Roslin, best known for his work on the presentation of statistics, schools a journalist on the how the media fail to report on the bigger picture. From Danish TV, September 2015.

Latest comment:

The mangled baby report contest results from evaporating viewership.

The aged and poor who still use broadcast TV are either dying or getting 5" smart phones.

Mr. Roslin sounds more like Don Quijote than Yosemite Sam, saying, "I'm right. You're wrong."

Ad sponsorship for televised news traces the trend of news print.

Sad. I really lost respect for Hans Rosling after this interview. I respected him a lot for his talks at TED.

So arrogant and incapable of listening, and so one-sided. So unpleasant, and not very trustable.

Dette var skuffende, Hans.

Very true. To exacerbate the situation, certain news outlets (more commonly right-wing and tabloid) print things they know to be incorrect in order to craft a juicy story, and when challenged on it give the smallest most elusive correction possible, if at all. All outlets put some kind of spin on events, even if it's just in their choice of which items to run, but only certain dangerous and irresponsible organisations willfully invent news and spoon-feed it to people not smart enough to question things. Non-Muslims don't dare set foot in Birmingham, didn't you know?

Yes, they seem to think they are responsible for guiding their readership by lying to them because they are too stupid to draw their own conclusions from the available facts.

It is also possible that journalists hired by these outlets fit a psychological profile similar to the editors/owners and therefore naturally distort and manipulate as part of their character.

Don't trust Hans Rowling either. He prattles on about improvements in Nigeria and then tries to attribute these improvements to a recently elected leader when it's quite clear that such improvements take time, and would have been instigated by the old incompetent leader..

Yeah, in the film adaptation of her book 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', the Bem character doesn't mention anything about improvements to the Nigerian economy. Seems pretty suspicious to me especially since shes a liberal/progressive author.

Ah yes I forget one of the most important books in the liberal progressive's armoury is "The joy of spelling". And yes the bit where dear Hans shouts "Your Wrong I'm Right", such eloquence and reasoning, and not a bit swivel eyed at all.

That's right, we progressive treat knowledge as a weapon purely for use fighting an enemy, not something to pursue out of personal curiosity or a desire to better our understanding of the world. What sort of sissy would do that?

All we need is the internet, a search engine and a unique talent for selectively picking and choosing facts, regardless of context, to form a deadly narrative that stuns an enemy with its simplistic yet perplexing confidence.

Know what I'm saying?

Absolutely, However in the absence of the ability to manage that, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. BTW. I nearly got lynched once for calling "Noah Chomsky", " Noam Chomsky" , so I know its a sore spot amongst liberals.

You missed out "The joy of punctuation." Do you need an explanation of the difference between "it's" and "its"?

F*cking priceless. You're such a chode.

And thanks for anecdote. Good job is not possible to get lynched in a fairy tale story. I'd image you wouldn't be with us anymore if that were the case. What a shame.

Now back to the issue of J K Rowling being wrong about the Nigerian economy. Can I have a source for that?

You'e suck a ******* joke. You remind me of Paul Weston the guy that started that self help group, racists anonymous (RA). Are you a member?

I might hire a church hall and start an narcissistic ahiests anonymous, where athiests go to learn the simple fact that becoming an athiest does not confer IQ points or education..Btw Did I say Hans was wrong about the Nigerian economy ... NO, did i say he seems to credit it to a recently elected Leader who hasn't been in power long enough to change anything ....YES. Learn to listen carefully. English comprehension is a skill, study hard and you will learn. BTW where the racism jibe comes from, I don't know , little voices perhaps ?.

You're so funny. You can't see what you're doing right as you're doing it. Its so twisted. That's why I know you're a recovering racist (a racist that doesn't say racist things anymore but still has irrational prejudices). Because you can't do simple logic or avoid contradicting yourself, like all racists. You have absolutely no idea and its sooo funny because you don't have a clue.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't be encouraging you. I should ignore you like everyone else does. Don't feed the troll and all that. I'm sorry again. Goodbye, you won't ever get a response from me again. Its not right to poke fun at mental illness and retardation.
