I can't believe how dumb these clever people are! I think they are paying too much for their education. We were taught in junior school that the shortest difference between two points is a straight line. The only way to reduce the distance between Mordor and the pier and Hogsweed and the pier is to extend the length of the pier so it starts further inland.

I didn't need a calculator or a pen and paper to figure that out!

Nice try but you didn't answer the question. You are not asked to *reduce* the distance but to *minimize* it. So you still have to decide where to put the pier (1). Plus, making a pier that starts maybe 10 miles inland will be quite expensive!

(1) unless you extend it to begin somewhere on a straight line between Mordor and Frogspawn, in which case it can be anywhere on that line, but best at Mordor so it is as short as possible.

If building the pier costs the same per mile as building a road then the best place to start it is where the three roads meet at 120 degrees. You can find this point using soap bubbles. At this point the lengths of the roads are minimised.

Elegant solution, but it comes up with the wrong answer.

The shortest path goes from Hogsmead directly to Mordor, and then continues straight down to the pier.
