Helicopter guy would love to get it on with skater girl. It's not gonna happen though even though he tries hard...

No, but here are 4 ways to make clear ice cubes that may have a bearing.

LINK

Sadly it's not obvious which method applies best to the lake:

1) low impurities in the water

2) freezing from the top down (I thought this was the normal way)

3) freezing from the bottom up (not sure how this would work with a lake)

4) freezing slowly at just below 0 degrees

Take your pick

Thanks!

1) Don't know about impurities, but there is less dissolved gas in lower pressure - maybe this is sufficient at this height.

2) You are right - otherwise ice on lakes would always be clear.

3) Bottom up, when the ground was frozen and the lake flooded gradually... Don't know if this is too probable, especially since the pilot says if she breaks in he would pull her out. So there is probably water beneath.

4) Slow freezing probably also not - I would hypothresise that the slow freezing probably leads to the dissolved gases having the time to gradually leave the water. But with the top being frozen, the little bubbles would be trapped.

So I would go for 1) not so much gas, and maybe low amounts of other impurities / soft water.
