Or, you could carry a small supply of dog treats in your pocket. If a dog happens to attack, provide it a tasty treat as a substitute for your flesh. When the dog is distracted by the treat, grasp it firmly by the back of the neck and the upper jaw. Raise the hand holding the jaw, thus exposing the dog's throat. Bite firmly, and with a head-shaking motion, rip the throat from the rest of the animal and expel it from your mouth by spitting it out. That dog is now suitably gentled.
