AT&T broke up their business a second time in 1996. Companies like Transtech was sold off, AT&T Universal Card was sold to Citibank, and Western Electric, Bell Labs, and AT&T Technologies spun off to become Lucent. AT&T needed the money to buy major parts of Cellular One and McCall Systems to begin offering wireless services. People don't remember much about the old AT&T and only know them as a wireless service provider today but they also provide internet and TV (through DirecTV and UVerse).

If they didn't break up the company, Bell Labs was probably best suited to create these technologies.

Funny thing is that they used to be a local telephone company and the long distance company. Because of their monopoly status, they were ordered to brake up in the 80's and spun off the local telephone companies into different regional local companies. AT&T has been buying up those small companies again and is providing local telephone service through the existing POTS lines.
