A McDonald's in the Netherlands has agreed to remove urinals that are shaped liked wide-open red lips.
The decision was taken after a shocked American customer complained to the McDonald's head office in the US. Owner Giel Pijper said the bright red, mouth-shaped urinals, named 'Kisses', are works of art. But a different view is taken of them in America. The urinals are being removed and will be sold off.
Virgin Airways was forced to scrap plans in 2004 to install two of the 'Kisses' at New York's John F. Kennedy airport after complaints they looked like women's mouths.
They are the work of Dutch woman Meike van Schijndel, designer at the Utrecht-based firm Bathroom Mania! Speaking to Expatica in 2004, she said the urinals were designed as a fun cartoon mouth and not as a woman's mouth.
She stressed that the idea her urinals represented a man peeing into a woman's mouth never occurred to her, nor to many men and women she had spoken to.
Degrading to women or toilet humour?

They're not degrading, or a reflection on the USA's political stance... they just look shit.

Those people (men and women alike) who want to be offended will always find a way to fulfill their want. The Dutch as a nation are renowned for their liberal minds and innovative ways. If Americans want to travel and see the real world non-Disney version of everything then they had better accept it the way others want it to be and if you don't like it then just accept it and move on. There are far more offensive things in Holland than a stylish urinal, if you want to be offended that is.

Latest comment: It would be an American to complain about something like this. They probably thought they could get some money out of it. Personally i think its a great idea. humorous and snazzy. i bet they are kept super clean.. wonder what they used, Colgate??? Seriusly though, why would anyone that lives thousands of miles away in a different country be bothered about a Urinal???!!

You have to laugh at them. As usual, travel to another country and stuff your fat face with McBastards. Ever thought of trying local cuisine? Maybe make a G.Bush shitter, now there's an idea.

I am not an American and I find that repulsive. And those who like it - really just shows how much class they have.

Haven't eaten there in 3 years because of far more unsanitary happenings... so it's the least of my worries. Though, it makes me wonder that the American went to Amsterdam and it took a toilet in McD's to shock him!?

I can't believe all the double standards that prevail throughout the world. It's a laugh for god's sake, which the Americans are patently unable to do unless they are told to. May be we could put an American flag in the pissior and see what reaction that brings - WMD?

How funny, yes I am an American but yet as I read through all the remarks from people from somewhere other than the US, I have to laugh! Because it is so true, that in the land of the "FREE" that we might just have too much freedom to speak our minds. Because anything that is not acceptable to common society, in most Americans' eyes, must be changed! It's bull shit if you ask me. Quite frankly, I'm jealous that the women's restrooms didn't have toilets like that! What's wrong with a little diversity? It's fun!

Maybe travelling Americans should learn to go to places other than McDonalds when travelling - I've seen many unusual things in Holland!! ;-)

I think it is amazing that McDonald's, whose advertising is directly aimed at children, should install these toilets. While I am sure a number of adults would find these amusing, it seems highly inappropriate to encourge children to urinate in anyone's mouth.

Americans always seem to find opportinuty to complain when they feel that something might be out of place. Not considering that it might just be there for humorous purposes. Soon we'll sue Ronald McDonald for making fun of large shoe size baring clowns...

Why point out things like this by making them taboo? Only really dirty-minded people would think they were degrading anyway, and such people should keep their thoughts to themselves! I was BROUGHT UP feminist, and even I don't find them offensive.

Neither of the above... It's degrading to clowns though. I reckon the real reason for removing those urinals was that Ronald McDonald was worried about his winky being nibbled when he tried peeing in one and threatened to sue...
