2001 Census: From the people who responded to the voluntary Religion Question, 14.6% stated that they had no religion. Although only 37 million responded to that question so the rest could be agnostic or didn't like the question. Also, 0.7% said they were Jedi

Yeah, and 'Jedi', in my case at least, was a protest vote. I'm not sure about the current lot, but Blair basically wanted to replace the established church with a hotch-potch of "official" religions. He failed. I slag the Yanks off a lot, but at least they, in theory at least, have secular government. The goal here in blighty has to be to replace the established church with a secular state, rather than an even worse variety of privileged, "official" religions.

Uncle Sam when you control the largest empire ever and start and industrial revolution and create a social and economic model the is '150 years ahead of the rest of the world' then we can start to compare countries. America is 226 years old . You had a clean slate and you still managed to f*ck it up. Christianity was invented by a pagan Roman Emperor to control people. Religion has caused more immorality then anything else.

Religion does not exist, get real man. Think about it, in only 100 years we could wipe out religion if it was not taught to children. I`m sure this would save lives in the long run. Is most of the american tv companies run by hard core christians and this is the dross they air. I`m from England and there is a big percentage who do not believe. Why is it perceived as a cult, oh no there atheists, argh quick run for your lives there is an atheist sitting next to me on the bus !!!! get real man

Amazing. Just how far behind are the Yanks slipping? That report could have been made in the 19th Century. "They look like a normal family, but they're actually atheists!"

Some of the comments here are almost amusing to read. There is one thing that we all share as human beings, and it's called free will. Here in America, we are allowed that right. In some other countries, not so. I could not imagine my life without Jesus Christ. Believe me, there are many Christians who do not follow the rules that were instructed to us. I will not sit here and bash any other nation or faith.

I love the reporters astonishment at the fact that it's possible to lead a normal life without religion. They make it seem like religion created morality. Worrying religious arrogance.

lol yeah I agree. I wonder what percentage of England are atheists? Much higher I woulda thought. I quite like the idea of a religion that doesn't believe in a God. More like a belief in a moral code (i.e. something real) than a belief in fiction

In America, and I would imagine in Europe to, I think that a lot of people will call themselves christian, simply because they believe it is the right thing to do. Not because they attend church regularly, or pray etc. But for purely tribal reasons, out of loyalty perhaps?
