The best way to avoid confronting the truth is to pretend it doesn't exist. That always seems so childish to me. Mankind thinks itself so smart, but doesn't even understand its own behavior. We hate God for not doing everything for us. We hate Him for making us responsible for how we treat ourselves and each other.

Yeah, he's an absolute schizo kunt: one minute he's a pure prick in the old testy (jealous even though he made it all) and then he's all lovey-dovey (having his son killed for 'sins' he could solve if he wanted to). Why the secrecy too? I mean, if there are rules you want us to follow, tell us directly...why do we always have to believe some tit who was 'chosen' up a mountain whilst no one else was around?

Any idiot can argue for the status quo (like physical reality). Trying to argue for the existence of a non-physical cause for reality is a bit of a trick, which quantum physicists have have been able to do, and even prove it, even to simple-minded atheists, as long as they are open-minded enough to accept the possibility that they could be wrong.

Having said that, I will admit that Fry got the better of her, but that's like prize fighter beating up on a nun - no surprise there. Let him argue his athiest religion of materialism with a scientist who's done quantum physics experiments.

My theory is that most Christians haven't read the Bible. I did for the first time a few years ago, and was utterly appalled by what was in there. Even the New Testament, which is supposed to be better, is utterly disgusting in most places.

Don't religious people have anything intelligent to say? If it makes you happy to believe in god, fine, but don't go inflicting your delusions on others.

What a twat the first guest is: intelligent people cannot just turn on (or off) their beliefs...they need evidence! I could, I suppose, pretend to believe in your silly god; however, would he not, being omniscient, know that I am faking it? We honestly don't believe because there isn't any evidence for one.

Religion and science both have the potential to play their roles for the benfit of mankind and are not mutually exclusive. To discount one or the other based on only certain aspects of either is folly. What is worrying is that the recent publicity the debate is receiving is sensationalist, simplistic and sinister.

If you believe in god, this is clearly the devils work, driving people from religion. If you tend more toward rational science, you probably realise many of the arguements use flawed logic. Both science and religion are important in order to understand human experience. We will in a much worse place if either are forgotten or ignored.

She asks for opinion from obviously more intellectually equipped opponents, then chooses not to listen to the real arguments that are put! This to me is the way of religious zealots....REASON CAN NOT WIN WITH THESE PEOPLE! let them go "la la la la .....i'm not listening.....la la la l a" and let us rational people stop wasting our time, and let them hopefully disappear in a flash of argument with 'other denominational' and equally enthusiastic zealots!

I am shocked over Fry's bad answer: slavery? are you kidding me? the type of slavary issued in the Bible is uncombarable to the modern meaning. slavery in the Bible, was a period of no longer than 7 years of payless laboer, and in which time they where allowed to own property and mariage, with their children borned outside of slavery. and after the 7 year periode, they where richely rewarded for their services, in cattle and coin.

This argument has made me laugh so many times. Gospel doctrine does not make people unhappy or excluded, people do!! God cannot prevent terrorists from killing the innocent, people can. Conversley, God does not feed and clothe the poor, people do. God can influence lives to serve others, without monetary gain, despite the arguments solicited within this viral. It's almost as if Stephen Fry dislikes those of the Jewish faith, simply for what they believe. Why this is of such distress to non-believers, bafffles me.

He doesn't dislike Jews in particular - he's speaking about all the faiths originating from the "desert nomads" - including Christianity & Islam. Why it causes distress in non-believers ? - seen anything on the Texas Board of Education lately ? If THEY would keep their bizarre "faiths" to themselves we wouldn't be distressed - but they (Christians mostly) want to cram it down our throats, undermine science and run the government - you bet I'm distressed !!
