I'm sure there's a law about thermodynamics which says something about the heat going somewhere... where does the heat go? and what happens as the surface heats up again?

where is the acknowledgement of the ocean as one vast and complex system? the ocean currents such as the gulf stream are regulated by salinity and temperature, a small change in temperature in one area may lead to huge impacts further afield. A typically short sighted and self indulgent idea.
