John Cleese sounds off on Americans and football

John Cleese sounds off on Americans and football

Why do Americans insist on calling football soccer? John Cleese points out the obvious. From the documentary The Art of Football from A to Z (2006).

Ummmmm ... the Australians also call it soccer (The Socceroos) and at one time, soccer and football were used pretty much interchangeably in the UK. For God's sake, there's a magazine (based in the UK) called "World Soccer". Get over it!

Odd then that the game of Football, as Americans call it, was created before the modern advertising bubble. Another dull rant from another boring brit who failed to make it in the U.S., and is thus bitter. Oh, and the Jazz that he positively compares to soccer is a purely American invention; that is, where everyone has to think for themselves and be creative!

We call it Soccer because we already have a game called football....it's that simple...get over it. What is he talking about when he says American football is simple? Soccer is the epitome of simple. Kick the ball into the opponents net, do not touch the ball with the hands and try not to break a finger nail. How much simpler can it get. I've seen trained dogs do it. Now go do something meaningful....like brush you teeth or taking a bath (preferably both you bloody wanker).

You didn't even watch this did you? He explains quite carefully why american football is for simpletons (because you don't have to think to play it). Of course the rules are complex to give the illusion that you have to think. Football proper (which does precede american football btw) requires the players to actually think for themselves in order to play... of course this is an alien concept to americans anyway.
