Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence. In other words, it is war minus the shooting.

Latest comment: who care about what George Orwell thought? His views are not mainstream, nor do they reflect the reality of most people who participate in sports. Short of war, it is best test of a man physical strength, mental prowess, and desire to excel. I say screw George Orwell and his verbose persiflage.

In the 1972 Canada/Russia hockey series, Bobby Clarke "two handed" a hockey stick accross Vladimer Karlimovs ankle and broke it in half. Karlimov was "undoubtably" the best hockey player in the world "at that time". Clarke broke Karlimovs leg "behind the play" and "away from the eyes of the referrees". No penalty was called. Canada barely won the series BUT everyone in the world outside of Canada lost all respect for Team Canada. I beleive "Professional Sports" can best be decribed by Orwells above statement but "most sports" under the age of 10 are healthy to play and enjoyable to watch.
