Scientists sentenced to prison for bad quake advice!

Scientists sentenced to prison for bad quake advice!

(1:35) Act of God, or scientists' fault? Six Italian scientists and a government official have been found guilty of multiple manslaughter for underestimating the risks of a deadly earthquake in the town of L'Aquila in 2009 that left 309 people dead. All seven members of Italy's Major Risks Committee were sentenced to six years in prison.

Oh, good. So their successors will basically advise people to constantly panic... Until they go to jail for that. Then, their successors... people who could theoretically try to give good advice... will give none.

Italian judges must be atheist otherwise they'd rule that earthquakes are an act of God, surprising in a country where over 80% of the population are Catholics.

Ever notice how all the destructive things like hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes are acts of god? Shouldn't they be considered acts of the devil instead?

Latest comment: That's what religious people believe; however, if I created a child, and that child grew up and committed a crime as an adult, I'm no longer responsible. So are you saying that since god supposedly created the devil, god is now responsible for everything the devil does? I wonder what would happen if my insurance company denies a claim because of it being an act of god and then I go to court to sue god. God will not show up so will I automatically win my case?

Just insane!! OK, they may have called it incorrectly, and the concequences are very sad, but what can they do? Seismology is not a black and white discipline. I'm sure all advice was given in good faith, mistakes happen. This is nothing more than a modern day witch hunt or lynching.....just insane!!

Not surprising really, Italy tried and found Galileo guilty of heresy over his Heliocentrism work. Italy is regressing . . . . . . sad really.

This is crazy and dangerous. More effort/money should be invested in research so that future predictions are more accurate. Remember that ubiquitous phrase "there are lessons to be learnt"? Banging up scientists is totally the wrong lesson.

So what if the scientists were over cautious and the big quake did not happen? Would they have to pay hotel bills for those who moved out unnecessarily?
