Michael Moore speaks out on gun control

Michael Moore speaks out on gun control

(2:29) July 2012: If one suffers, everybody suffers. In the aftermath of the theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado, filmmaker Michael Moore calls for Americans to take care of each other, rather than just themselves.

Guns are rife here, and they are a part of our culture. People of all incomes and political views possess them. Firearm Possession is also protected by the US Constitution (which is nigh-impossible to change on a contentious issue). So the solution cannot be to make them illegal. Making guns illegal in the US is akin to prohibiting whiskey in Scotland or beer in Germany. (both of those are killers too!) We cannot over tax them, we cannot prohibit them, we cannot even restrict them except from mentally imbalanced or historic criminals. The rest of the world does not fully understand how deeply guns are a part of the US culture. Nor that the US was founded on individual self-reliance that included self-protection and firearms. Nor that 99% of firearms are held by respectable, tax-paying, peaceful, tempered citizens. To "modernize" the US's firearm policy would be to deny an intrinsic part our nation's identity, but also would not be possible given the quantity of guns in circulation. Until US citizens can depend on Law Enforcement to provide a much higher level of physical protection, guns will be prevalent.

Well stated. There are approximately 300 million guns in the United States with 4 million new ones added yearly. Gun can stick around for centuries. Any gun control would require the removal of 300,000,000 firearms from our streets. So the idea of restricting access to them is no longer a real option. The guns are part of our constitution and they are here to stay. People want us to remove the ability to purchase "assault" rifles but the truth is that these mass shootings are done with pistols -- not rifles. It's much easier to hide a gun and sneak it into a school or theater than a rifle is. The same day 20 children died in the US, a similar attempt was made in China with a knife. Apparently, these mass killings are occurring all the time in China with knives but you don't hear about knife control.

Get your facts straight. On 3/23/2010 Zheng Minsheng murdered 8 children in an elementary school in Nanping. On 4/12/2010, Wu Huanming killed 7 children and 2 adults with a cleaver at a kindergarten in Hanzhong, Shaanxi. On 8/4/2010, Fang Jiantang killed 3 children and 1 teacher at a kindergarten in Zibo, Shandong. 9/2011 Wang Hongbin killed 1 child and 3 adults while taking their children to nursery school in Gongyi, Henan. Of course many more were wounded and taken to hospitals but you can see people were killed during those mass killing attempts. If you want to know the numbers of wounded which far exceed the actual murders, let me know.

50 years ago African Americans were second class citizens. That was also part of the US culture and the same arguments were used then.

I agree with much of what you say, but slavery was once a part of first world culture, so was racism and homophobia. These mindsets haven't disappeared, but they are certainly declining. Heavily ingrained mindsets can change. Surely a world where people walking around unarmed is better than a world in a constant state of civil war paranoia?

It is true that guns don't kill people, crazies do - but when there are lots of crazies around, guns make it worse. Just pop over to Mexico and have a wander. I think long-term, the solution is education. Short term, we are probably stuck with more mass shootings.

Cannot over tax them? Whatever gave you that idea? Of course we can tax them as we please. Further, we could easily pass legislation prohibiting the manufacture, sale and possession of smokeless powder. The constitutional fundamentalists couldn't possibly complain, they can still make their own black powder for their muzzleloading muskets to reinforce their fantasy/desire to retain their ability to overthrow their own government by force of arms...as if their Bushmasters and drum magazines would be able to do so in the drone age. Modern ammunition having only so long a shelf life, we'd have a much safer society in a relatively short period of time.

No, you have it wrong. The Supreme court has decided twice recently, in 2008 and 2010, that we can have guns. To tax us would be a burden and prevent us from our rights to bear arms. Regarding the ammunition debate, In "Heller and McDonald" the Supreme Court supported the individual rights model. Under this model the militia is composed of members who supply their own arms and ammunition. Ammunition is a basic component of the militia so they have to allow us to manufacture BOTH guns and ammunition.

He's right! It is not a "dog eat dog world" but many people living together with differences, togther. Eliminate guns and elect politicians with domestic and foreign policies that prevent poverty, discrimination and hatred.

Jezuz H Christ what an idiot. Obama is a great guy? Does any one else see the hypocrisy of a man who orders drone strikes that kill and maim hundreds of innocent bystanders including women and children around the world and yet says you must guns away from people so they don't harm each other? Besides why no mention of the other common denominator Micheal, Prescription DRUGS?

He states the reason they have universal healthcare in Canada is because when one suffers they all suffer. Well, I think they have it because people would prefer to pay taxes to pay for healthcare of other people instead of everyone paying for their own products and services. If I want healthcare, I should pay for it. I don't think it's fair to force me to pay for your health care in addition to my own. Regarding the shootings, he didn't give any solutions so it was a worthless interview.
