The American govt. is supposed to be a liberal, for the people govt. but it has taken away most of your rights while protecting their own, Corzine for one glaring example, not to mention gun running to Mexico , spying on the press and pepper spraying protesters....to name a few from your tolerant liberal big govt. so my point still stands , govt. is the problem not the solution, look at France, the euro zone in general, almost anywhere in fact, govt. is the problem.

liberal in America and liberal in Europe are 2 different things. Liberal in Europe means what you would call libertarians, all those parties that want small government and less taxes, deregulation, no rules, the wild jungle, Somalia. As a European, i can tell you that your republican party is something that we would call a "Far right extremist party" and the democrats are what we would call "a center right party". You have no "liberals" in the way you mean it but you do have liberals in the European sense of the word. What you don't have is a social democratic party that can promote policies similar to those promoted by Teddy Roosevelt. You do not have in America the kind of liberals you think you have, so all of your governmental problems come from right wing conservative policies.

PS: turkey is not in the EU but it's government is a conservative government, so my point still stands. Biggest problem in Europe is youth unemployment, which is a direct result of all those Right wing policies implemented in the past decade, and of deregulating the labor market... Globalization and right wing ideas are great for corporations, but they are hell for human beings.

Turkey is a member of every European organization, from Nato, the OECD, and Customs Union. Turkey was invited to the join the EU very early on when the EU only had six members but the Turks declined. They applied to join again in 1987 and was determined eligible in 1997. The negotiations started in 2005 and Turkey is now a candidate country for EU membership. LINK
