Do we need industrial agriculture to feed the world?

Do we need industrial agriculture to feed the world?

(6:30) The corporate food industry claims we need their methods of industrialised farming to feed the growing world population. But is this really true? Anna Lappe of Food Mythbusters takes on this question. FoodMyths.org

Latest comment: The thing is, it's a bit more nuanced. The smart use of technology (including certain GM, and careful use of small amounts of fertilizer is a good thing). But bad things also happen: biofuel is an insane idea (except when recovering waste), and most GM isn't used to improve crops, but to allow plants to tolerate more pesticide. With antibiotic resistance so high, routine use should be restricted to humans,

loved the video! the amount of food we grow can also be increased through Aquaponics. Growing plants and veggies in a multilevel aquaponic technological greenhouse can quadruple the output of organic healthy food whilst using only 5% of the water that regular agriculture uses. it also doesn't harm the Bees, in fact, predatory insects are bought and grown in some advanced hydroponic farms in order to kill any pests that might find their way in. The difference between Aquaponics and Hydroponics is that Aquaponics uses only fish crap as fertilizer, meaning that you can also grow fish. State farming subsidies should go to these types of enterprises, better yet a PPP in this field, following the model of statoil, can be implemented in every SMART and PROUD country in the world... but oligopolies will never let that happen. Here's more on Aquaponics LINK and LINK . You can also find a lot of very interesting videos on youtube on this subject.

Sustainable farms cause elevated levels of erectile disfunction and are the reason why the American auto industry is on its knees. See I can spout 'facts' without sources. Industrial agriculture has saved billions (with a b) from starvation in instances like the Green revolution in India, Norman Borlaug won a Nobel peace prize for his work in it. The food myths website doesn't have any links to all the studies that they talked about as well. Plenty of links to self interested lobbying groups who support them though.

Um, nice reply, but wrong all over. The so-called green revolution was simply one of the first instances of corporate farming getting its sweaty paws into the food industry. It's true that in the short term it did indeed save millions of lives - not difficult given the state of Indian farming after the way the British left it. Indian farming right now though is in crisis, due to its increasing dependence on Agri-Chem. However, there are what I dare to call the green shoots of recovery in places like Nalanda in Bihar, where the local farmers, using entirely natural methods and non-GM crops, are harvesting record amounts of rice, potatoes and other staples. The Agri-Chem industry, understandably, are royally faffed off. As I don't doubt you are.

not faffed off, I have no great love of the Agri-chem industry I just don't like it when large lobbying groups on either side present arguments based on trumped up studies with no basis in reality. Chemical fertilizers and industrialised farming are not perfect, but they are the easiest and cheapest way of doing things. The Nalanda SRI is far from proven, give it atleast another 12 months now that the technique is being applied to more than a handful of hectares.
