I have to say something this time. How can these occupy participants think breaking loitering laws is a freedom of speech issue? Can I go speeding down the highway with a sign on my car saying, "keep money out of politics" and when I get pulled over for speeding claim that they are infringing on my first amendment rights? You cannot break other laws unrelated to your freedom of speech while exercising your freedom of speech. Go home and hold up your sign in your own lawns. Better yet, go to work. Also, while I'm on my rant, how can they support "keep money out of politics" while using Freedom of Speech as their basis for breaking local laws? The Freedom of Speech is what allows corporations to pay for advertisements in newspapers or TV (they are still forbidden from making any financial donations to candidates). You cannot use the 1st amendment for your cause and expect to take the 1st amendment rights away from others.

All tax payers fund congress not just the 1%. Congress salaries are much lower than what the private sector pays so it's not really that much money. These representatives and senators are elected into office and a poor person's vote counts just as much as a rich person's vote.

A little disingenuous cengland0. More funding = more votes. "representative voting in favor of a particular corporate-friendly law will receive 6 or 10 or 13 times the funding than someone who opposes the law. " - Source Maplight

I agree with your first bit (occupying a public park is not a freedom of speech issue) and your last bit (you can't use the 1st amendment to take away the 1st amendment rights of others). Your middle bit is illogical, Jim, and is the equivalent of asking "How can they support 'keep money out of politics' while sitting on their bottoms". Welcome back

Corporations are not allowed to donate to political candidates. Their only option is to communicate their positions (Freedom of Speech). They are allowed, just like any citizen, to purchase TV or newspaper advertisements to express their views. I do not have a problem with Freedom of Speech for anyone. So these people that were in the video holding up signs saying, "keep money out of politics" really don't know what they are saying. They should be saying, "Let's revamp the 1st amendment and make it so corporations are not allowed to say anything."

Corporations employ millions. They also have the ability to provide products and services for less than small businesses. I started my career working for large corporations and have never wished I worked for a small company instead. Corporations give paid vacations and sick time, offer FMLA, give pensions, offer 401k's, health insurance, and have more options for upward mobility.

You do realize that a person that owns a business all by themselves can incorporate too, right? So is it really corporations that you hate or just large companies? Where are you drawing the line? Is it the amount of profit they earn, the number of employees they hire? So do you hate Warren Buffet because he's rich or just the companies that he invests in?

If they want to modify the constitution, they are going about this the wrong way. They should be contacting their senators and representatives to have the proposal voted upon. If they get 2/3rds votes, then it needs to be ratified by 3/4ths of the states. Simply loitering on public property is not going to accomplish what they are proposing.

How can these occupy participants think breaking loitering laws is a freedom of speech issue? Well: "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech...or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Anti loitering laws have been addressed in the courts already and have been found to be constitutional.  Even when the laws have been challenged due to the First Amendment rights, higher courts have defended the anti loitering laws of the states. LINK

Gandhi kicked the Brits out of India with passive civil disobedience. Evil can be publicly shamed out of power using peace, it just takes more courage and determination than violence does.

Indians were many, Indianans were poor, Indians had little to lose, there was no secret service to put and end to a movement before it started, there were different times then, it was a different situation. Different strategies for different situations, and it's clear to all that occupy failed. Blood shed is necessary, the sooner the better.
