John Oliver - How is Ayn Rand still a thing?

(3:41) Russian/American novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand is a significant influence among libertarians and American conservatives. But considering her promotion of selfishness as a virtue, how come she's still a thing?

The, "me", generation and Ayn Rand stoked and fomented each other. Many are still kicking as one percenters who don't give an ef about the rest of humanity but have indoctrinated their heirs to perpetuate the ideology of selfishness.

I remember the Dalai Lama saying once, in paraphrase, that if you want to help yourself, help others first, and then you reap rewards many times over, so that you can help others first as a selfish motivation. You can't consciously want specific selfish outcomes as you help, or it won't work. But if you genuinely care for others, the rewards do come back.

This is much wiser and more mature than Ayn Rand's philosophy. If you have the attitude of serving yourself at the expense of others, then you project the constant fear that others are doing the same to you (and they are) because of the Law of Attraction. If you are unselfish, you attract unselfish people around you, and therefore benefit indirectly, and it's more fun, because the benefits are always like opening gifts at Christmas, they just are full of surprises and are usually better than you would pick for yourself.

“If you are unselfish, you attract unselfish people around you” If you are unselfish, you attract takers.
