Driving tip: the zipper merge

(1:27) When coming to a lane closure, getting over early into that long line may not always be the best way to get through.

I'm not going to use the zipper merge because that relies on other drivers being courteous. In my experience, drivers don't let you in and you can easily get stuck at the end of the lane until several cars pass and one finally is nice enough to let you in. The driver merging has the responsibility to make sure it's clear to merge not that the driver in the other lane has to make room for them.

The Germans have been using this method for years. It works well when everyone plays along. I have never had any serious problems or close calls. The only time it doesn't is when people start to merge really early, realize their lane is not going anywhere and that the other lanes are free and jump out again, (almost) causing a crash.
