This is a problem of human arrogance, nothing else. It's a simple answer  - yes - that has turned into a stupid philosophical debate.

If 2 people on the other side of the planet are talking and we don't hear it, there was still sound. D'oh. Sound doesn't require a recipient to be sound. It's the same dumb principle where people thought the earth was the centre of the universe. Get over yourselves.

If I make a joke and you don't get it, it was still funny. Your problem, not mine.

Just because you don't 'get' a philosophical debate, doesn't mean it''s stupid.  In fact, it may suggest the opposite.  Maybe thought experiments aren't your thing.
