Wait a second, I thought 97% of climate scientists thought AGW was real.  How can 38% of meteorologists think otherwise and still have a 97% statistic.  That's right, there was never a poll of scientists.  It was a study of cherry picked papers and the assumption was made that papers equals scientists.  They forgot about those scientists that didn't write any AGW papers.

Meteorologists are not climate scientists - one studies weather, the other studies climate.

The 97% refers to ALL peer-reviewed climate research between 1991 and 2011 found with a keyword search. That's not cherry-picking. Can you suggest a better way to measure the size of the consensus among experts on climate change from 1991 - 2011?

There is no "assumption" that papers equal scientists. It's just how media reports on the 97% statistic. "97% of scientists..." is a much better soundbite than "97% of peer-reviewed climate research between 1991 and 2011..."

You think cary could have got this far in life by listening? How many qualified teachers and tutors succeeded when they taught him science? How many leaading scientists has he listened to in the media? How many smart videos and websites have got through to him?

But you think your going to be the one that educates him, right? Pure arrogance

I don't think it's pure arrogance. I've had enough debates with Cary to know he's not for changing. And he probably thinks the same of me.

I've always taken the view that if the experts really are right about climate change, then there will be a compelling answer to every climate denier's objections - and if I don't already have that compelling answer, I just have to do the research.

And it works. Over the past years, I have destroyed every single one of Cary's objections to AGW - not because I'm clever, but because he's wrong, It's easy to show someone is wrong if they really are wrong, and you've got Google and almost every expert are on your side.

From debating with Cary, I have learnt a lot about climate change. For example, Cary once suggested that the warming we are experiencing is the natural warming/cooling cycles that happen between ice ages. Knowing almost nothing about ice ages, I had to do some research. The reason why we have ice ages is actually quite interesting. And it soon became clear why Cary was wrong - basically, the warming and cooling cycles between ice ages are extremely slow and play out over many thousands of years - but the warming we are experiencing today is playing out over a few decades, so they can't be the same process. I learnt something, and since I had to communicate what I learnt to Cary, hopefully others who read the post can also learn what I just learnt. What happens in Cary's mind, I frankly don't care.

Fake and arrogant.
If what you said is true you could do that without getting into a argument with him and correcting him. You're not doing it for the benefit of us because we have better ways of learning than to reaed pages of a pissing match on a forum.
Most of us can make a mental note of it without trying to explain to him why hes wrong. He's obviously a special needs kind of guy, why keep on at him ?
It doesnt work. It reinforces the cognative bias that you both have. You are both looking for the evidence to back up your own point, whatever it is.  I've seen you argue some total bullshit on here yourself.
Its like trying to explain to your dog why he shouldnt eat his own shit.  Everyone else alreaady knows, your dog will never understand, so even trying is pretending your Mr Doolittle.  You ain't.

“Meteorologists are not climate scientists” That’s the first I’ve heard that.  Meteorologists get a bachelor or higher degree in meteorology or atmospheric sciences.  Can you tell me what degree a climate scientist gets since you think it’s not in meteorology?

“The 97% refers to ALL peer-reviewed climate research between 1991 and 2011 found with a keyword search.”  Isn’t that what I said.  It’s cherry picked papers, not scientists.  I keep hearing everyone state 97% of scientists agree….  Well, they don’t agree.  People who “feel” that AGW is true, will write a paper about it.  Like the guy in the video, he doesn’t feel a need to write a paper about his views on AGW.  Many people that don’t believe something do not want to take the energy to state their point.  I do not believe there is a God and I do not write papers about it but many people who do believe in God write books about it all the time because it’s their passion.

“Can you suggest a better way to measure the size of the consensus among experts on climate change from 1991 - 2011?”  Find a list of all the people who obtained a BS in meteorology and send them a poll.  But you have to be careful because not all of them will be returned.  Many of those that do not agree would not want to be on record in fear of being harassed by their peers.  So you might have to make their responses anonymous somehow.  Once you do that, then you could really say that a certain percentage of climate scientists agree or disagree (whatever the outcome would be).

“’97% of scientists…’ is a much better soundbite than ’97% of peer-reviewed climate research between 1991 and 2011…’”   I don’t care about soundbites.  I care about the truth.    Regardless of how hard it is to say, you need to say it correctly and accurately.  Falsifying the statistic to make it easier to say (but in my opinion is to be more convincing), is wrong and once you make a mistake like that, what else have they done to lose your trust?

Why don't you google "difference between meteorologist and climate scientist".

Yes, the 97% refers to peer-reviewed papers, but they are not cherry-picked. They are ALL papers between 1991 and 2011 found with a keyword search. That is not cherry-picking. Cherry-picking would be selecting only papers that agree with AGW, and that is not what happened.

Your better way to measure the consensus ( Find a list of all the people who obtained a BS in meteorology... ) is a terrible way. All you'll get is an opinion from weather forecasters, which is much less compelling than ACTUAL research by climate scientists. Even so, American meteorologists who are skeptical of AGW are still a minority at only 38%.

"97% of scientists is a much better soundbite ... I don’t care about soundbites" It doesn't matter whether you care about soundbites or not. I was just explaining how the media works.

“google difference between meteorologist and climate scientist” Trying to weasel out of answering the question about what degree they both get.  You probably realized they both get the same schooling but have picked different career paths.  It’s like you can get a BS in computer science and then become a programmer or you can be a systems engineer or you can become a database designer.  They all start with the same degree.  Instead of telling someone to google their answer, why not just give them the answer?  There’s obviously a reason you didn’t. You obviously have no problem with your typing abilities and you do participate in the discussions here.  My guess on why you didn't answer is that you’re ashamed that you were wrong and don’t want to publicly admit it.

“found with a keyword search. That is not cherry-picking.”  To qualify, it must meet specific criteria. First, it needs to be peer-reviewed.  Second, it must mention AGW.  Clearly that is cherry picking.  Perhaps they could have picked all papers regardless if they were peer reviewed or not and if it doesn’t mention AGW, then that’s one for the side that doesn’t think AGW exists.  Have you ever thought about that?  The fact it must mention AGW is already skewed.  Remember, the vast majority of peer-reviewed papers from people with theology degrees say that God exists.  Is that cherry picking?  Think about that.

“All you'll get is an opinion from weather forecasters” Not true.  Climate scientists get the same degrees.  It’s better than hearing the opinion from Bill Nye or Chumsky or whatever his name is.  How about Neil deGrass Tyson talking about it, he's not a climate scientist but everyone listens to his opinion on the matter.  Tell me what degree a climate scientist gets and then you can use that to poll the right people.  Are you willing to tell me what that degree is yet?

“I'm just explaining how the media works.” I know exactly how the media works.  They use scare tactics to sell their stories.  If everything is going great in the world, nobody would watch the news.  They have to make something sound bad so people will watch.  Nearly every news outlet is liberal and they have an agenda and convincing everyone that AGW is true is on their agenda.  If it was a conservative media, they wouldn’t be talking about AGW it as much.

I don't want Jesus to educate me.

He hints towards climate scientist and a meteorologist having different credentials.  I said they both have the same BS+ degree and pointed out which degree they both have.  I challenged him to tell me what he thought the certification was that each gets.  I'm not looking to be educated by anyone since I already know the answer.  Since he refuses to answer, he must have discovered he's wrong and is embarrassed about it.

Try this thought experiment. A friend has a heart problem. There are 100 peer-reviewed studies on this problem by cardiologists from all around the world, over a 20 year period. 97 studies come to Conclusion A. 3 studies come to Conclusion B.

Obviously, that's one hellova consensus for Conclusion A. But you disagree. You say the studies are cherry-picked because they all study something about this heart problem. @!?*!% I'm lost for words. Would you be happier if we add a few studies about traffic calming in Florida? Cherry-picking would mean looking at the 100 studies and then cherry-picking studies only from the 97 that came to Conclusion A.  And that's not what happened. One of the keywords used to find the climate studies was "global warming". If a study rejects global warming, it will still use the term "global warming" and therefore be found in the keyword search. These studies were not cherry-picked.

Back to the thought experiment - I ask you to suggest a better method to measure the consensus of experts who agree with Conclusion A. You suggest: round up as many dermatologists as possible and ask them for their opinion. After all, they also went to medical school. You are either a brilliant comedian, or a total idiot.

You are trying to change the subject with some weird ass thought experiment.  All I asked you to tell me is what degree a climate scientist gets when they graduate from university.  Can you do that simple thing?  I said meterology and you seem to think something different.

I’m not following a red herring about cardiologists because my whole conversation started with that 97% of scientists figure being a bogus number and I mentioned why.  You are then trying to tell me about traffic calming in Florida and cardiologists from around the world.

“I ask you to suggest a better method to measure the consensus of experts who agree” I told you but you said that a BS in meteorology wouldn’t get climate scientists.  So I asked you which degree we should pick.  You still haven’t answered.

Climate science is a specialised area of meteorology. As is weather forecasting. Cardiology is a specialised area of medicine, as is dermatology. You wouldn't rate the opinion of a dermatologist over a cardiologist on matters of the heart, even though they both studied medicine. So why would you rate the opinion of a weather forecaster above a climate scientist on climate change? That would be nuts.

A dermatologist has the same base medical training as a cardiologist. After they get settled in and are practicing medicine, they can pick specialties to focus their career paths.  Or are you saying that a dermatologist has not had enough medical training to know about the heart?

Like I said earlier, both a climate scientist and a weather forecaster gets the same training through university.  They can pick whatever career they want after that.  Some pick weather forecasting and some pick writing books and papers about global warming.  But that does not mean a weather forecaster does not have the same knowledge as a climate scientist about how the planet’s weather works (unless, of course you compare BS with Phd).

You don't understand commas?

That's hilarious, you NEVER finish an argument and usually bail without answering half the points against you. Dont you know you do that?  Like every time?

Like I said no one owes it to you to educate you or feed you attention. Go back to your shrink.

Excuse me but I've been out of this site for a long time.  I just started posting again after about a year or more. Just waiting for the right time to discuss Global Warming again.

You might be confusing me with that Cary guy that everyone else is chatting with.  I've been here longer than him and he left and I'm still here. I remember the day he left.  You can look at my older posts to see that I've been here several years.

Hey Poppet, sorry to intrude.  I wouldn't get hung up on the whole 'Cary' thing.  Some users (owners?) are obviously able to know for sure, but everyone else just uses 'Cary' to refer to any conservative who is unable to back themselves up, contradicts themselves, uses cyclical arguments, and swiftly plays victim and disappears when there's too much intellectual pressure.  That's what they mean when they call you Cary.  I think.

So, you may not be Cary, but you know, if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, you're a duck.  If only we had a duck expert around to confirm our hypothesis.

Yup, that's what I thought.  You don't believe me and you don't even want to look.  Go back 9 years or more and see that I've been around longer than that.

I know you deniers aint too great at understanding evidence but HUH? You think setting up another account earlier would prove something?  Jesus.

Lets see, your fake enough to distort figures, to refute evidence, to lie, maybe you would be fake enough to set up multiple accounts.

You think me being around longer than that Cary dude is a made up fact.  Incredible liberal thinking.  You don't even want to try to fact check and just make assumptions instead.  You can also check my IP address and confirm that I'm in the USA and not in the UK like the other guy you were chatting with.

I'm not going to argue with you about it.  I know who I am and that's all I need to know.

You're probably referring to me.  I'm not in the UK now, I've moved on to Germany.  Been there a couple weeks now.  Nodoby noticed.

Nope, that’s not it.  Apparently there are a bunch of Boreme members that care about what this guy Cary is doing on a daily basis.  He must have left some lasting impact on these users to have such an emotional response.  Also, these same people like to think everyone on the site is Cary.  They think I’m him, they think guest 1234567890 is him, and probably others but I don’t follow all the comments here.  It certainly is funny though.  I never saw a single post from anyone claiming to be Cary so I’m curious what he did that got everyone all riled up.

Dear, dear, dear. The day anyone on this site cares about Cary in the same way you care about this site will never come.

I mean returning again and again to this site, despite it being against all your values, and purveying some witless half-truths, I guess this site has had a pretty big impact on you too?

You don't follow the comments on here?  Uhuh, OK.

It's fine.  If becoming a epiphet for poor debating skills is an achievement, then be a Cary with pride!

This, in a single sentence, expresses the attitude of any denier of scientific method:

- I'm not looking to be educated by anyone since I already know the answer.

Yes, I already know the answer but WalterEgo said eluded that I was wrong.  If so, he should be able to tell me what degree a Climate Scientist gets when they graduate from the university.

That's a difficult question to answer directly because the correct answer leads to the wrong conclusion. Sorry if your head just exploded.

Climate scientists and weather forecasters may hold the same degree, but a weather forecaster's expertise is in weather forecasting. A climate scientist's expertise is in climate forecasting.

That's why a consensus on AGW between climate scientists is more compelling than between weather forecasters. And don't forget, the consensus between American weather forecasters is still high (62%), just nowhere near as high as between people who actually study the climate day in, day out.

Or, have you thought that the concensus has more to do with who is funding them.  The news channel pays for the weather forecast and they know they will have a job as long as they want one.  The climate scientist applies for grants and is usually paid through a university or government agency and the money might not be there the following year.  I see a potential conflict there.

walter, your patience is astonishing. i stopped trying to educate the denial lobby many years ago. i really couldn't imagine an area of science where i would disagree with every single national science academy unless i was a total bigot or ultra-religious. both options preclude a sensible debate.
