Triscuit appears afraid of what he sees as aggression and tries not to provoke. But he doesn't make himself small, instead moves very slowly, carefully.

I think we far to easily believe in our own interpretations of animals' behaviour and motives. But then, it's more than 30 years since I had a cat, so I'm definitely no expert.

Thought experiment: If Triscuit understands that Shadow is blind and wants to get away... Why not simply make use of that explosion of motion that cats are capable of? A blind cat would never be able to follow.

I'm no cat expert either.

Obvioiusly Triscuit doesn't understand the concept of blindness.  I think she has just figured out that Shadow only responds to noise, so moves as quietly as possible.  An explosion of movement wouldn't satisfy that criterion.

Figuring out that someone is blind is different to figuring out that they only respond to noise, but it's semantics.  For Triscuit they manifest in the same way.

Or Triscuit tries to move as slowly as possible, i.e. as little provocative as possible. I don't think we shoud conclude about motives by observing behaviour.

I don't think we should always conclude about the understanding of concepts by observing simple behaviour, but deducting motives is part of any behavioural science surely.

But you're right.  The cat is trying to be as unprovocative as possible, and she has figured out that creating sound provokes Shadow, but slow movement doesn't.

That is her in effect treating Shadow as if he is blind, even if she doesn't realise it.
