Excellent talk.  What is so refreshing is that he outlines his views, but also gives references and sources so anyone wishing to fact-check can do so.  Clearly, not everyone has that skill.

Appeal to Authority fallacy.  He throws out names and books to show that his points are valid but nobody’s going to look up those references and read those books.  His discussion should be able to stand on it’s own without throwing out names of experts in the field.  Otherwise, let’s listen to those experts instead of Chomsky.

OK so you don't understand what an Appeal to Authority is.  It is where you judge the veracity of your argument purely according to a perceived expert who believes it.

That's not the case here.  He's not saying the Green Deal is economically viable just because Robert Pollin (who?) says so.  He describes Pollin's stance and other factors.

If you won't so terrified of expertise and fact-checking, you could use videos like this to learn things.  Just imagine!

I don’t even know why I’m bothering to respond.

“When writers or speakers use appeal to authority, they are claiming that something must be true because it is believed by someone who said to be an 'authority' on the subject.”  Chomsky is constantly mentioning books he read and people who wrote those books to validate his points.  If his points were valid, they should stand on their own.  No need to provide list of names of other people who agree with him.

[I know why you bother:  As an antidote to your normal existence, you love the attention and you can pretend to be anonymous so when people laugh at another really simple mistake, you don't feel personally tarnished.]

You completely misrepresent Chomsky.  He isn't saying his points are true because an 'expert' believes them.  If that were the case he could have chosen far more persuasive experts, and he needn't have explained anything.  As it is, he explains his points (within reason for an interview format), talking about subsidies, comparisons to the past, etc, but he gives you references so that you can go into more detail if you were the type who liked to fact-check and do research.  You're not.  In your world, every paper and book that has a bibliography must be committing the same fallacy.  Those darn experts again.

Just to check - where did you get that quote about the fallacy from?  An authoritative website, I presume?

Nope, not at all.  But Chomsky should stick to linguistics, his real specialty.

I know what my specialties are and you’re just sore that you don’t know me well enough to figure it out.

Someone like Chomsky, his credentials are public because he likes being exposed.  He must have been hurt in the 90’s that makes him hate republicans so much that he only talks about politics instead of what he was trained.  Just because he was an activist to speak up against some wars, doesn’t make him an expert in the field.  In fact, since he was always against them, maybe he doesn’t understand as much as he claims because there were reasons behind each war.

“your secret specialty “  Try specialties.  Plural.

“so why not keep your mouth shut until that moment” Because I don’t want to. You don’t have to reply.  Whenever you see a message you think is from me, just move along and act like nothing happened.  Easy.

“Until theres a vid about ducks your specialty is well and truly hidden”  WTF, how did this conversation turn into one about ducks.  Is there some back story I should know about?

I knew I shouldn’t have replied to that first comment.  I’m leaving, have a great life.  Go bother someone else now.

You have to excuse him. He's heavily afflicted with the well known all-American syndrome named 'all hat, no cattle'.

Oh mate.  Do you realise how tragic that sounds?  Like I said, if you're an expert in something it shows, especially when you talk about so many topics.

If you're arrogant and deluded enough to claim to have multiple 'real specialties', your words here need to back you up - even just occasionally.  It's not good enough just to have a hissy fit every time a genuine expert gets our respect, and it's not just something you can just make up and be believed, not with your history.  I could enumerate all the subjects where you've made really, really simple errors in understanding, from politics to economics, linguistics to history, computing to science, but I don't want to further injure your fragile self-esteem (and in fairness, maybe you genuinely believe it - there may be a Dunning-Kruger situation going on).

But please, leave the Walter Mitty fantasy stuff.  It turns you into a clown and you're already mocked enough.
