I think on one hand, some ideas aren't just intellectual exercises to sit down and have a gentlemanly debate about. On the other hand, it's important to not let any set of ideas turn into an echo chamber. It's important to remember to have the common sense about what's up for debate and what isn't. Both extremes of the free speech argument have it wrong. On one hand some think all ideas are equally valid and worth discussing, everything from whether or not to raise taxes on the wealthy to whether or not Hitler's final solution was justified. On the other hand, there are people again who lump those ideas together for the opposite reason. I guess what I'm saying is we seem to no longer have common sense, there's always a dilemma of "all's okay" vs "nothing's okay", instead of what it should be "most if it's okay, and we should use our better judgement to determine what's what", as better judgement seems to ahve gone the way of the dodo.

Agree. It’s about proportion too. For a fair and balanced discussion, of any issue, needs representation of both points of view. However, this has to be balanced carefully to not give a minority position an equal 50/50 standing. If you take the climate change debate of earlier times were media outlets (particularly the BBC who tried to inject some degree of fairness)  would have to have a climate denier  on any panel where there was a climate change scientist present. This gives out an impression that the scientist and an idiot have equal merit leaving the debate open and gently swaying public opinion away from facts and science - in this example.  Likewise to discuss the pro and cons of say fascism do we have to have  a neo-Nazi on  the panel or do we not have a discussion at all? a discussion that may have helped understand why these people have adopted such extreme views and any hope of preventing further escalation of their ideals and no hope of ever helping them see the wrongs in their ways!

How do you decide 'what is up for debate'?  If you are told that one of your views is not up for debate because it's not common sense, how do you react?

See, I have a hard time understanding people who consider a bit of very mild jostling to be 'an assault', and yet don't see themselves as so-called SJWs.

If that really qualifies as an assault in your world, I'd consider you to be part of the same cotton-wool-clad fragile souls that get offended by everything.  Don't they have a name?

Yes this really qualifies as an assault because in my world I have a degree in law and know the legal definition

Sure you do Mr Mitty.  I can just imagine you shrieking on the Tube when someone nudges you.  Kids these days are too precious.  If you don't think your cause is important enough for you to get jostled, that says it all.

Oh I see... when factually challenged, mount an ad hominem attack and change the subject.

That says it all

Not changing the subject.. just pointing out the ridiculous hypocrisy of calling people SJWs whilst getting offended and treating very minor physical contact as an 'assault'.

If we're talking logical fallacies, you may want to look up 'Appeal to authority' before inventing unverifiable credentials.  Obviously if you really had a law degree you would know that the threshold for prosecution is set considerably higher, thank god.  You'd probably also be able to punctuate a sentence, but there we go.  Says it all, right?

Anything should be open for discussion. However, if you find yourself getting unreasonably angered by the topic or cannot provide a genuinely thoughtful debate, even of subjects you find distasteful I might suggest that you do not get involved. When you fail to see other points of view, start shouting abuse or name calling or hijacking the subject to serve as a platform for your own radical beliefs, you lose a lot of credibility. If you say you want an honest discussion but have the intention of turning it into a screaming match, you don't deserve the option of a decent exchange of views.

You still deserve a decent exchange of views. Though this may take the form of classroom discution, when behaving as an adolecent you need a talk circle.

The Voice.

The Pen.

The Brush.

The Camera.

Talk. But listen too.

What happened to freedom of speech and reasoned debate. Not difficult to identify the facists here. The extreme left are just as dangerous as the extreme right but they can't seem to grasp this.

I truly don't understand the extreme left anymore.

I value so much of left wing beliefs and support equality of opportunity for all.

The primary freedom has to be freedom of speech. If you can't accept this, then all will be tossed into the revolution... Like Stalin, like Mao, like Cambodia, Like Viet Nam, like Korea (North and South) and yes, like Hitler.
