As an AGI engineer - Tesla are attempting to solve and build AGI in order to reach full self driving. We are decades away from artificial general intelligence.  TESLA also aren't working on the correct technologies to even build AGI so don't expect it soon from them.

As a non-engineer, I thought self-driving was narrow AI - ie. AI that was good at doing one thing - in this case, driving.

Autopilot isn't going to play chess, or compose music.

"doing one thing"

I think you underestimate the complexity of driving a car.

Maybe "doing one thing" isn't the best use of words. Surely self-driving is within the realm of narrow AI - ie. AI that has one purpose, in this case driving.

Narrow AI is like a super human driver, whereas general AI is like a super human.

Hm. Playing chess may be doing "one thing" and seems to have one purpose, although difficult as I drop out after making a few moves in my head.

Driving car is a quite complex behaviour, relying on humans' ability to subconsiously handle lots of information. Which humans have developed through evolution.

I think driving has several purposes, among the most important are bringing me from A to B and not hurting anyone on the way. The latter, it seems, is difficult to program as we humans intuitively grasp things that a machine needs to get spelled out. But here I base my argument on popularised presentations of how self-driving cars are developed.
